Local Hero: Daisy Robinson – A Beacon of Hope for Peterborough's Homeless

In a city bustling with activity, it's easy to overlook those who quietly dedicate their lives to helping others. One such individual is Daisy Robinson, a recent recipient of the Peterborough Civic Award for Community Involvement.

Daisy's commitment to supporting the homeless community in Peterborough is nothing short of inspiring. Through her tireless efforts, she has provided warmth, sustenance, and a listening ear to those who often feel invisible.

Her work goes beyond mere charity; it's about restoring dignity and hope. Whether it's organizing food drives, coordinating shelter accommodations, or simply sharing a cup of tea and conversation, Daisy's presence brings comfort to many.

Her recognition at the Civic Awards is a testament to the profound impact one person can have on a community. As Mayor Marco Cereste aptly put it, "We have some absolutely fantastic communities in Peterborough, and the Civic Awards are a great way to celebrate those who make a positive contribution to our city and surrounding areas but don’t always get the recognition they deserve."

peterboroughtoday.co.ukDaisy Robinson embodies the spirit of selflessness and compassion. Her unwavering dedication serves as a reminder that true heroes often work behind the scenes, making the world a better place one act of kindness at a time.

An Evening at Gurkha Durbaar: Spice, Warmth, and a Little Bit of Magic

We’d heard whispers about Gurkha Durbaar for months—the kind of place people quietly rave about.

So last Friday, we finally booked a table and made our way down Broadway, curious and hungry.

From the moment we stepped inside, there was a calm buzz that set the tone—soft lighting, beautifully carved wood panels, and the sort of warm welcome that instantly makes you feel looked after. Not rushed, not overly formal—just genuinely kind.

We started with the momo dumplings (we were told they’re a must-try), and they were exactly that: delicate, slightly spicy, and moreish in a way that made us quietly regret not ordering two portions.

For mains, we went for the butter chicken and Himalayan lamb curry, along with garlic naan and a side of lemon rice. The butter chicken was everything you’d want it to be—creamy, tangy, with just enough spice to remind you it's not messing around.

But the lamb curry? That was the show-stealer: rich, deep flavour and meat that just fell apart with a fork.

There’s something about the way they balance spice here—not overpowering, but properly warming. The kind that lingers, in the best way.

The service was quietly brilliant. No fuss, no hovering—just good timing, smiles, and a real knowledge of what they’re serving.

One of the team noticed we were curious about the Nepalese side of the menu and gave us a few recommendations we’ll definitely be back to try.

By the end of the night, we were full, happy, and just a little smug we’d finally made it there.

So if you’re after something different—something done with care, flavour, and that rare feeling of being properly looked after—Gurkha Durbaar is more than worth a visit. Just don’t forget the momos.

Trivia Question❓

What popular annual event in Peterborough features a dragon boat race, live music, food vendors, and family activities?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Another One Bites the Dust – FatFace to Close Queensgate Store

It’s the end of an era for fashion fans in Peterborough as FatFace prepares to shut its doors at Queensgate Shopping Centre on 15th June. The closure follows the brand’s acquisition by Next back in 2023, and comes off the back of a reported £3.2 million pre-tax loss.

For locals, it’s another knock to the city centre’s once-thriving retail heart, following the exits of John Lewis and M&S in recent years. While online shopping rises and high street habits shift, there's a growing question: what will fill the gaps?

Love it or loathe it, FatFace was a staple. And its absence will leave more than just another empty unit — it adds to the challenge of reimagining Peterborough’s city centre for the next chapter.

Celebrating Local Legends – Finalists Revealed for 2025 Community Business Awards

Peterborough’s unsung heroes in business are getting their moment in the spotlight. The Peterborough Community Business Awards have officially unveiled their 2025 finalists, and the line-up is a brilliant reminder of the innovation, heart, and hustle happening right here in our backyard.

With 24 businesses across 13 categories — including Best New Business, Employer of the Year, and Best Charitable Contribution — this year’s awards promise to showcase everything from social impact start-ups to long-standing local legends.

The big night is set for 20th June at the Delta Marriott Hotel, hosted by Prismstart, a local non-profit that supports ex-offenders into meaningful work. It’s more than just a glitzy evening — it’s a celebration of community, resilience, and the businesses making a real difference.

Keep an eye out — you might just spot a familiar name on the winners list.

Big Plans, Big Budget – Station Quarter Set for £65 Million Makeover

Change is coming to the gateway of Peterborough. A £65 million transformation of the Station Quarter is on the horizon, and it’s not just about a lick of paint.

Thanks to a hefty £48 million boost from the Levelling Up Fund, the project will deliver a brand-new station entrance, an expanded footbridge to ease the crush, and a fresh swathe of green space — think gardens, seating areas, and a welcome that feels more like a civic plaza than a car park.

Construction is expected to kick off soon, with an eye on completion by 2026. Whether you’re a commuter, a local business, or just someone who’s dodged the traffic outside the station, this is big news. The city’s transport hub is finally getting the facelift it’s been waiting for — and hopefully, a boost for the whole city centre to follow.

Brains, Breakthroughs & Big Ambitions – ARU Peterborough Unveils New Innovation Hub

If you’ve wandered past the ARU Peterborough campus lately, you’ll have noticed something new — a sleek, modern building that's set to shape the future of learning and innovation in the city.

Welcome to the £17 million Research & Innovation Centre, the latest milestone in Peterborough’s growing university story.

Inside? A simulated hospital ward, cutting-edge science labs, and engineering spaces designed to spark ideas and careers in equal measure. It’s not just a shiny new facility — it’s a game-changer for local students, businesses, and the economy.

The goal? To put Peterborough firmly on the map as a place where learning and industry collide — and to keep talented young people studying, working, and staying right here in the city.

Interesting Facts

  • From Medeshamstede to Modern City

  • Before it was Peterborough, it was Medeshamstede — a name that rolls off the tongue like a riddle, but simply means “meadow homestead.” This peaceful patch of land sprang to life around a 7th-century monastery… and never looked back.

  • Cathedral Views Worth Craning Your Neck For

  • The stunning Peterborough Cathedral doesn’t just dominate the skyline — it earns it. With a 44-metre tower and stonework that’s stood proud since the 1100s, it’s one of the country’s most impressive medieval churches. The façade alone is a marvel — like a Gothic jigsaw carved from limestone.

  • All Aboard the Nene Valley Time Machine
Fancy swapping your daily grind for a cloud of steam and countryside views? The Nene Valley Railway lets you do just that. Running vintage steam and diesel trains through Cambridgeshire’s greenest corners, it’s a proper escape — and a firm family favourite.

Business Spotlight: Bradshaw Electric Vehicles – From Stibbington to the Forefront of Green Transport

Nestled in the quiet village of Stibbington, just a short drive from Peterborough, you’ll find a business that’s been quietly doing big things for decades. Bradshaw Electric Vehicles, a family-run firm with humble roots, has grown into the UK’s leading manufacturer of industrial electric vehicles – but you won’t find them shouting about it.

It all started in the 1960s, when John Bradshaw set up a plant hire company. What began with diggers and dumpers slowly evolved. By the mid-70s, they were heading in a new direction – building electric vehicles designed to take the heavy lifting out of industrial transport. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was smart, sustainable, and exactly what many industries didn’t know they needed yet.

Fast forward to today, and Bradshaw’s vehicles are used everywhere from airports to factories to hospitals. They make everything from tow tractors to passenger shuttles – all built to order, right there in their Stibbington workshops.

What’s remarkable is that despite their success, they’ve never lost that small business soul. They still operate from the same patch of Cambridgeshire countryside, still invest in local talent, and still approach each job with care and craft. It’s not about mass production – it’s about making something that works well, lasts, and makes life easier.

In a time when going green is more urgent than ever, Bradshaw Electric Vehicles proves that proper innovation doesn’t need to come from a shiny city office. Sometimes, it starts in a village garage with a good idea and a lot of elbow grease.

Summer Recipe: Herby Courgette & Feta Fritters with Lemon Yogurt Dip

The vibe: Light, zingy, and slightly addictive. These fritters are what happens when your veg drawer and your cravings get along really well.

Perfect for: Lazy lunches, light dinners, picnic boxes, or smug leftovers.

🛒 You’ll Need:

  • 2 medium courgettes (grated and squeezed dry)

  • 100g feta (crumbled)

  • 1 egg

  • 2 spring onions (chopped)

  • A handful of fresh mint & parsley (finely chopped)

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • 60g plain flour

  • Salt & pepper

  • Olive oil for frying

For the dip:

  • 200g Greek yogurt

  • Juice of ½ lemon

  • 1 small garlic clove (grated or minced)

  • A pinch of salt

👩‍🍳 Method:

  1. Mix & Mingle:
Chuck your grated courgette into a bowl with the feta, egg, spring onions, herbs, lemon zest, flour, salt and pepper. Give it a good mix — you want it sticky, not soupy.

  2. Sizzle & Flip:
Heat a splash of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Scoop heaped tablespoons of the mixture into the pan and flatten slightly. Cook for 3–4 mins per side until golden and crispy.

  3. Dip Duty:
Stir your yogurt dip ingredients together. Taste. Add more lemon or garlic if you’re feeling punchy.

  4. Serve & Soak Up the Compliments:
Stack your fritters, dollop that zingy dip on the side, and maybe scatter over some extra herbs if you're showing off. They’re great warm, even better cold.

  5.

Pair It With: Cucumber Mint Spritz (Non-Alcoholic)

Think: Garden party in a glass.

  • ½ cucumber, sliced thin

  • A few sprigs of mint

  • Juice of 1 lime

  • 1 tsp honey or agave (optional)

  • Sparkling water

  • Ice

  •

Muddle the cucumber, mint, lime juice and sweetener in a jug. Top with ice and sparkling water. Stir, pour, and sip like the classy hydrating human you are.

Kid-Friendly Tweak: Cheesy Courgette Bites

If your little food critics aren’t feta fans, swap in mild cheddar. Ditch the green herbs and go light on the lemon zest. Turn them into “dippers” with a tomato or ketchup-based sauce and suddenly they’re golden veggie nuggets.
