 Local CAMRA information describes it as a recently refurbished 19th-century pub, with beams and flagstone floors, seven cask ales and a craft beer.

It has also been identified as Peterborough branch Rural Pub of the Year for 2026.

That combination gives it something a destination pub needs: a sense of place.

You’re not simply choosing a bar with a longer drinks list. You’re heading out to a historic village pub with a traditional setting and a beer range that gives the visit a purpose.

 For a quiet rural detour, a catch-up or a Sunday-style outing, this is the one we’d put first on the list.

The Yard of Ale, on Oundle Road in Peterborough, is a different proposition.

 It’s in a 120-year-old building, but its appeal is less about escaping to the countryside and more about having something going on around you.

CAMRA lists live music and outside wood-fired pizza among its attractions, and it has been named Peterborough branch Pub of the Year for 2026.

That makes it the better bet for anyone who wants a lively city setting, food and entertainment in the same trip.

 It may be less of a rural adventure, but a pub doesn’t have to be remote to be worth travelling for.

Then there’s The Palmerston Arms, the specialist choice for serious real-ale drinkers.

The Peterborough pub offers up to 14 ales served directly from the cask, with a cellar-viewing window and food or snacks available.

 If the beer itself is the reason for the journey, that is a hard offer to ignore.

So which one wins? There isn’t a fair single winner without pretending every pub-goer wants the same thing.
