£100 Coming To Millions Of Households But Will The Budget Really Leave You Better Off?

Sally's Savers Budget Special: Energy bill help, higher wages and a fuel duty deadline. Here's what Peterborough households need to know before counting the savings.

£100 For Your Energy Bills  Are You On The List?

Here's the headline that will catch plenty of eyes in Peterborough.

Households in England living in council tax bands A to D could qualify for a £100 Household Energy Payment from January 2027.

The scheme is aimed at main homes, and the government says it could reach up to 20 million households.

If you pay council tax by Direct Debit and qualify, the payment is expected to go into your bank account automatically. Other eligible households may need to follow instructions from their council.

Sally's Savers Check: Find out which council tax band your home is in. And beware of unexpected texts asking for bank details  scammers love a government payment announcement.

Electricity Bills: Another Saving, But Don't Spend It Yet

The temporary zero rate of VAT on qualifying domestic electricity has been extended until July 2027.

The Treasury estimates the extension will help reduce the annual Ofgem price cap by around £50 in April 2027.

But that isn't a guaranteed £50 cash payment to every household. Actual bills depend on your tariff and energy usage.

Higher Wages But Not Until April

Minimum wage rates are due to increase by 3.9% from April 2027.

Welcome news for workers who qualify, although the actual improvement in household finances will depend on working hours, tax and other costs.

Motorists: Watch The July Deadline

The temporary 5p-per-litre fuel duty cut has been extended until 1 July 2027.

After that, the cut is scheduled to end and rates are set to rise with inflation.

For drivers already struggling with fuel costs, that's a date worth remembering.

Sally's Savers Verdict: Don't Confuse A Headline With Money In Your Pocket

A £100 payment sounds welcome. So does relief on electricity bills.

But some changes are months away, some households won't qualify, and everyday costs won't magically disappear.

Your three-minute money check:

  1. Check your council tax band and the official eligibility guidance.

  2. Review your energy tariff and actual consumption.

  3. Check whether the wage or fuel duty changes affect your household.

Have Your Say

Will this Budget genuinely help your household — or will rising bills swallow the savings?
