Parking in Peterborough isn't simply a case of finding the nearest empty space.

The cheapest option can change completely depending on whether you're popping into town for 20 minutes, staying for lunch or arriving after work.

For a quick stop, look at the short-stay bays on Lincoln Road, Millfield. 

The first 30 minutes are free, then it's £1 for up to an hour or £2.50 for two hours.

That's hard to beat for a short errand provided you leave within the signed limit.

These bays also have maximum stays and no-return rules, which stop you coming back to the same bays within the stated period, so "I'll just nip into one more shop" can become an expensive habit.

For longer daytime visits, Regional Pool car park is one of the lower-cost council choices: £1 for one hour or £5 for up to five hours.

By comparison, council on-street bays around Dickens Street, Wellington Street and Brook Street are £2.10 for an hour and £6.20 for a longer stay.

There's another saving to remember. From 3 August 2026 until the end of March 2028, Bishops Road, Car Haven, Riverside and Pleasure Fair Meadow offer free parking on weekdays after 3pm under the council's scheme.

Check the signs when you arrive, but if your shopping, appointment or evening plans start later, that could beat paying for a central space.

Queensgate carpark is the more obvious privately owned car parking comparison, but not by any means the cheapest. 

Its standard price starts at £2.80 for up to two hours and rises to £17 for more than nine hours.

There are specific deals: Cathedral and Museum visitors who have their parking discount confirmed can get four hours for £2.80, while parking is free in all car parks after 5pm on Thursdays.

The trap is assuming every Brook Street space, or every central car park, follows the same rules.

Some sites are privately operated, and using a discount or site for the wrong purpose may bring extra charges or enforcement.

Unlike many major cities Peterborough does not currently run any kind of Park and Ride scheme where you can park outside the city centre and take a bus in. It has been discussed for years but never seems to have come to fruition.

The quick rule: short errand, check Lincoln Road;

several hours, compare Regional Pool;

late weekday afternoon, check the free council options;

Queensgate, use it when its specific deal fits your visit.

Save the council parking page before setting off  the signs on the ground still win and could save you a ticket.
