There are some arguments you're never going to settle.

Best footballer ever.

Ketchup in the fridge or cupboard.

And in Peterborough:

Who does the best Full English Breakfast?

It sounds like a simple question until you start looking at what you actually get for your money.

Because right now you can find a Full English around Peterborough for £6.50 at one place and nearly £13 at another.

So is the £6.50 breakfast a bargain?

Is the £12.95 one twice as good?

Or is price only half the story?

We went looking.

£6.50 in Paston

At Flavour in Paston, the Full English is currently listed at £6.50.

For that you get two sausages, an egg, two bacon, beans, two hash browns, mushrooms and fried bread.

If that's not enough, there's a Big Breakfast at £8.50.

That's a pretty serious amount of breakfast for less than a tenner.

So Flavour sets our starting point:

How much more would another café need to offer before you'd happily pay £10, £11 or £12 instead?

£8.99 in Orton

Over in Orton, Courtyard Cafe  lists its Full English at £8.99.

That brings an egg, two sausages, two bacon, a hash brown, mushrooms, beans and tomato.

Already we've moved nearly £2.50 above the Paston breakfast.

Not an enormous difference.

But if you're buying breakfast every Saturday, it adds up.

And this is where simply declaring the cheapest breakfast the winner doesn't really work.

Maybe you prefer the sausages somewhere else.

Maybe the bacon is better.

Maybe the coffee, service or surroundings are worth another couple of quid.

Cheap and good value aren't always the same thing.

Small, medium or “I won't need lunch”?

Then there's Rosey Lee Café in Fengate.

This one gives you a decision before you've even started:

Small — £7.50

Medium — £9.50

Big — £11.50

That raises another important Full English question.

At what point does getting more food stop making something better value?

If the £7.50 breakfast fills you up perfectly, spending another £4 simply because somebody can fit more bacon and sausage onto the plate isn't necessarily a bargain.

On the other hand, there will be somebody reading this thinking:

“Obviously I'm having the big one.”

We know.

Just over a tenner

The Coffee Tavern in Oundle lists its Number 1 Full Breakfast at £10.25.

That includes two sausages, two bacon, two eggs, potatoes or hash browns, tomato, mushrooms, beans and toast.

So we've crossed the £10 line.

But look at what's on the plate.

Two eggs rather than one, plenty of the main ingredients and toast included.

Would you pay £10.25 for that rather than £6.50 elsewhere?

That's a much better argument than simply asking:

“Who does the cheapest breakfast?”

And then there's the £12.95 breakfast

At Lakeside Kitchen & Bar, the Full English is currently listed at £12.95.

Two sausages, two bacon, beans, tomato, mushroom, two eggs, hash brown and sourdough.

There's also a smaller breakfast listed at £7.95.

So even at the same venue you've got a £5 decision to make.

And now our Peterborough breakfast range stretches from:

£6.50 at Flavour

to

£12.95 at Lakeside.

That's almost double.

Would you happily pay the difference?

That's exactly what we want to know.

But there's one test the menu can't answer

Is it actually any good?

A menu can tell us how many sausages you're getting.

It can't tell us whether you'd order them again.

And this is where the Peterborough argument gets interesting.

A Full English can survive an average tomato.

It can probably recover from disappointing toast.

But a miserable sausage? That's harder.

You know the one.

Pale. Cheap. Mysteriously smooth inside.

Two of them don't become better simply because there are two.

Then there are the eggs.

Runny yolk or cooked through?

Beans loose on the plate or safely imprisoned in a little pot?

Hash browns? Fried bread?Black pudding?

And don't even get us started on whether chips have any business appearing on a breakfast plate.

So who have we missed?

We've got examples in Paston, Orton and Fengate, plus two more Peterborough contenders.

But there's no chance those five settle it.

What about Werrington?

Bretton?

Dogsthorpe?

Stanground?

Eye?

Hampton?

Or somewhere just outside Peterborough that locals will insist deserves to be included?
