Peterborough’s proposed Youth Zone has created plenty of argument, partly because people are talking about it as if the building has already been approved.

It has not.

The council has approved £410,000 from reserves to progress detailed designs with national charity OnSide.

The proposed overall project is around £13 million and a possible site has been identified on the Embankment close to the Lido.

But there is still no approved planning application.

The next design stage is intended to produce more detailed plans and a planning application.

A further Cabinet report is expected later in 2026 covering the proposed legal structure and finances.

The council also intends to seek Government youth funding.

Its own recent myth-busting update says that if external funding is not secured, the options would need to be reviewed.

What would the Youth Zone contain if it happens?

OnSide-style centres typically put a lot under one roof: sports hall, climbing, dance and music studios, media space, gym, arts, mentoring, cooking and sensory areas.

The intended age range is eight to 19, extending to 25 for young people with disabilities or additional needs.

That makes local residents more than just about “for it or against it.”

Is the location right?

What would teenagers actually use?

How should it work alongside existing youth clubs and organisations?

And what should Peterborough refuse to compromise on before millions are committed?

If you have teenagers, ask them. Their answer is probably more valuable than ours.
