An MOT is an MOT.

Same legal test.

Same pass or fail.

So why can one Peterborough garage charge £29.99 and another £50?

Good question i'm sure you'll agree.

The national maximum fee for a standard car MOT remains £54.85.

Peterborough City Council’s own published 2026/27 fee schedule uses that full £54.85 price for a car test at its workshop.

But commercial garages can charge less.

Peterborough MOT & Service Station on Padholme Road East, Fengate currently advertises Class 4 MOTs from £29.99.

Cartell at Dukesmead, Werrington lists an MOT at £39.95.

Eye MOT Centre on High Street, Eye lists its standard test at £50, with a free retest within ten working days under its stated terms.

So should you always pick £29.99? Not automatically!

Ask what happens if the car fails.Is the retest free?

Does it have to come back within a certain time?

Can the garage repair it?

Do you trust them to distinguish between:

“This is dangerous.”

and

“This may need doing sometime.”

That last bit matters because an MOT is not a full mechanical health check.

Cartell itself makes the distinction clearly: the MOT checks statutory safety items but does not test the car’s overall mechanical condition in the way a service does.

Price matters.

But trust matters too.

Especially when the £39.95 test turns into a conversation about £600 of work.

What you really want is a garage that can explain the difference between:

“This needs doing now.”

“This is worth planning for.”

“This is an advisory — keep an eye on it.”

That is the bit drivers remember.
