£29, £58 Or £65.99: What Should A Peterborough Gym Actually Cost? |
The difference between local memberships is big enough to pay for quite a few post-gym coffees. |

September is coming.
Which means gyms across Britain are about to welcome the annual migration of people who have decided:
“Right. Back on it.”
But what should a gym membership actually cost around Peterborough?
There is quite a spread.
Vivacity Silver membership at Hampton Leisure Centre is currently listed at £29 a month, with access also extending to Bushfield, Werrington and Jack Hunt.
JD Gyms Peterborough lists its standard 24/7 membership at £29.99 a month after the current introductory first month. Classes are included.
Move up to Vivacity Premier Fitness and the single-member peak price is £58, including swimming, gym access, sauna/steam room and multiple Peterborough venues.
Then Bannatyne Peterborough Health Club and Spa currently starts at £65.99 a month for full access, or £55.99 off-peak.
That means the gap between a £29 membership and £65.99 is almost £37 every month.
Over a year, that is more than £440.
But cheapest is not automatically best.
If one gym is five minutes from your house and another takes twenty, guess which one you are more likely to use on a freezing Wednesday evening?
If you swim twice a week, a gym-only bargain may not be a bargain.
If you train at 5am, 24-hour opening suddenly matters.
And if you only go six times a month, you may want to look harder at passes or pay-as-you-go options rather than proudly funding a treadmill you never meet.
Peterborough also has far more than traditional gyms.
Vivacity currently lists free wellbeing walks, athletics-track sessions, adapted cycling at £6, and Netfit Teens and Juniors at £4 a session.
So here is the September fitness test:
What do you actually use?
Gym? Pool? Classes? Walking? Sport? Or do you pay a membership fee mostly to receive monthly reminders that you should probably go? |
