Peterborough Cathedral’s summer calendar has taken a fairly decisive step away from the idea that a Cathedral visit must involve whispering and staring respectfully at stonework.

Titanosaur remains at the Cathedral until 13 September.

The Travelling Bricks exhibition runs until 29 August.

And Friday 28 August is particularly unusual.

There is an afternoon outdoor performance of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the Cloisters, followed by Lady Windermere’s Fan in the evening.

The same evening also includes an “Overnight with Titanosaur” event.

That is a sentence Peterborough could not have written a few years ago.

There are access details to check.

The Cathedral says general visitor entry during the Travelling Bricks period is through an exhibition ticket, although a designated chapel remains freely available for prayer and reflection.

It also says the Cloisters will be closed all day on 28 August because of the theatre performances.

So do not treat this as one of those “we’ll just wander in” weekends without checking first. Its a bank holiday and things are likely to busy most places.

Still, there is something encouraging about one of Peterborough’s oldest buildings experimenting with completely different reasons for people to visit.
