Peterborough Dessert Stops When Pudding Is the Whole Point

Sometimes you don't want dinner.

You want a waffle.

Or pancakes.

Or a slice of cake.

Or something involving enough melted chocolate that eating it while wearing a white top would be an act of extraordinary confidence.

Peterborough has plenty of restaurant dessert menus, but that's not what we're looking at today.

These are places to visit when dessert is the reason you're leaving the house.

No starter required.

AMORE DOLCI, Stanground: The One for a Serious Dessert Night

AMORE DOLCI sits on Desborough Avenue in Stanground, and this is not somewhere we'd visit after announcing:

“I couldn't eat another thing.”

Go hungry.

The menu is built around the big dessert-night favourites: waffles, cookie dough, crepes, cheesecakes, milkshakes and plenty of chocolate.

This is the sort of place for an evening when someone suggests going out for dessert and nobody needs persuading.

It also works well when everyone wants something different.

One person wants a waffle.

Someone else wants cheesecake.

Another person is apparently capable of drinking an enormous milkshake alongside dessert without considering that excessive.

Good for them.

AMORE DOLCI is at 7 Desborough Avenue, Stanground, Peterborough PE2 8RG.

Before heading over, check what's currently on the menu and the day's opening hours, particularly if you've got your eye on something specific.

Taste Trail move: don't all order variations of the same thing. Get different desserts and negotiate sharing rights before they arrive.

Trying to establish ownership once everybody has seen the waffle is considerably harder.

Pancakery, Rivergate: When Pancakes Are the Actual Meal

Rivergate is becoming increasingly interesting for food.

We've already got the Italian deli at Fratelli on our list, and a few doors away you'll find Pancakery.

As the name rather helpfully suggests, pancakes are the attraction.

And this gives us a completely different dessert trip.

Rather than the late-evening mountain-of-chocolate approach, Pancakery works for a daytime stop in town.

Meet for coffee.

Order pancakes.

Call it lunch if that makes you feel better.

We won't investigate.

It's at 18 Viersen Platz in Rivergate Shopping Centre, and its current opening hours are geared towards daytime visits rather than late-night dessert runs.

That makes it one to remember when you're already shopping in the city centre and reach the point where coffee alone isn't going to solve matters.

There's another idea here too.

Combine it with Fratelli.

Italian deli shopping followed by pancakes isn't a recognised culinary tradition as far as we're aware, but we're prepared to support it.

Taste Trail move: make this a daytime dessert stop rather than saving everything sweet for after dinner.

Dessert Haus, Lincoln Road: One for the Evening

Lincoln Road comes alive when you're hungry.

You can eat your way through a remarkable number of countries without travelling very far at all, and it's one of the parts of Peterborough we want Taste Trail to spend much more time exploring.

Dessert Haus gives us somewhere to finish.

It's at 601 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE1 3HA, and unlike Pancakery, this is an evening operation.

Current hours show it opening from 5pm, running into late evening and until midnight at weekends.

That immediately suggests the plan.

Dinner somewhere along Lincoln Road.

A wander.

Then dessert.

Or skip the first two stages entirely and turn up specifically because somebody has decided the evening requires something sweet.

We'd check the current menu before making recommendations about individual dishes because dessert menus have a habit of changing quickly particularly toppings, specials and limited items.

But that's also a decent excuse for us to visit.

Purely for research purposes, obviously.

Taste Trail move: make Dessert Haus the final stop on a Lincoln Road food crawl rather than treating dessert as an afterthought.

And What About the Big Dessert Cafés?

Peterborough certainly isn't short of them.

Creams Cafe Peterborough on North Street and Kaspa's Peterborough on Bridge Street both offer the full dessert-café experience: waffles, crepes, cookie dough, sundaes, cakes, shakes and enough combinations to make choosing take longer than eating.

Kaspa's current Peterborough menu, for example, includes everything from Bueno waffles and cookie dough to Basque cheesecake, tiramisu, croffles and gelato.

They're obvious options if you're in the city centre, particularly with a group where everyone wants something different.

Because that's where this gets interesting.

We Need to Talk About Peterborough's Sweet Tooth

The more we look, the more dessert places we find.

There's Sweet Swirl in Hempstead.

Dessert Craft in Hampton.

Nite Bite Desserts on Central Avenue.

And plenty more we've yet to try.

So we're not going to pretend three places settle the matter.

They don't.

Instead, this is the start of something we're going to do rather more thoroughly on Peterborough Taste Trail.

We want to find the individual desserts worth crossing Peterborough for.

Not:

“This place does nice desserts.”

That's no good to anybody.

We want:

“Go there and order THIS.”

The ridiculously good cheesecake.

The waffle that's far too big for one person but you're ordering it anyway.

The cake people quietly go back for.

The thing on the menu that sounds strange and turns out to be brilliant.

That's the information we want.

Because if you're going out specifically for pudding, you might as well make it count.
