Peterborough’s biggest change to the way people move around the city is already under construction and you may have noticed it before knowing what it is.

The first phase of the Peterborough Station Quarter regeneration is called City Link. 

It is designed to create a more direct walking and cycling route between Peterborough Railway Station and the city centre, running via Cowgate.

That means changes around Queensgate roundabout, including the removal of two subways beneath it.

The work is also affecting traffic management, bus movements, pedestrian and cycling routes, and parking at the station.

So, what is the project actually trying to fix?

At the moment, getting from the station into the city centre can feel like a fiddly start to a journey.

People on foot and bikes have to deal with roundabout traffic, subways and several changes of level and direction.

City Link is intended to make that connection clearer and easier to use.

Construction began on 26 May 2026. Peterborough City Council says the City Link work is expected to finish in spring or summer 2027.

The wider Station Quarter is currently estimated for completion by the end of 2028.

The full project has £47.85 million in government funding.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority approved the Full Business Case in March 2025, allowing the project to move forward with Levelling Up Fund money.

Peterborough City Council is working with the Combined Authority, Network Rail, LNER, Platform 4 and the Department for Transport.

That is a sizeable bill for a better route between the station and the centre.

The everyday test will be much simpler: can someone arriving by train walk or cycle into town without feeling that the road layout is working against them?

That answer does not exist yet.

The finished City Link will need to show that the route works for people walking, cycling and using mobility aids, not just that the building work has been completed.

The wider Station Quarter also has to stay on course for its 2028 target.

For now, expect the area around Queensgate roundabout and the station to keep changing as work continues.
