Peterborough has had a market for generations, but if you haven’t deliberately gone looking for the current version, you could quite easily miss it.

The City Market is now on Bridge Street, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Cathedral Square.

It operates from temporary timber kiosks beneath the trees, alongside a food hall.

And it isn’t just fruit and veg.

The council’s current trader list includes JP Butcher, Pop n’James, a Portuguese fishmonger, Get The Game, MM Fabrics and Accessories, S.J.W Fruit and Veg Wholesale and a deli.

MM Fabrics sells African fabrics, clothing, jewellery and accessories, while Get The Game deals in computer games and DVDs.

That mix is probably the most interesting bit.

A city market doesn’t have to compete with Amazon by selling the same things Amazon sells.

Its advantage should be the stuff you stumble across, the trader who actually knows what they’re selling, and the purchase you hadn’t planned before you arrived.

The market currently opens Tuesday to Saturday, 8.30am–4pm.

Car Haven is listed as the nearest car park at roughly a three-minute walk, while the railway station is around nine minutes away on foot.

Peterborough is also looking at buying around 20 moveable temporary stalls so the city can attract more specialist and artisan markets.

That could be where things get interesting.

Not necessarily a bigger permanent market. Perhaps more reasons to think, “What’s on at the market this Saturday?”
